Design Systems for Small Teams

Design Systems for Small Teams

Small teams hear 'design system' and imagine months of work. In practice, a useful system for a small team is a handful of agreed decisions that stop you redoing the same choices on every screen.

Start with tokens, not components

Define your colours, spacing, and type scale first. These few decisions create most of the visual consistency, and they take an afternoon, not a quarter.

Build components as you need them

  • Promote a pattern to a component the third time you use it.
  • Keep one source of truth for buttons, inputs, and cards.
  • Document the rules in plain language next to the code.

Let it grow with the product

A design system is a living agreement, not a finished artifact. Add to it when repetition appears, and resist building for screens you have not designed yet.
